Homestead Butcher Class

In this class, we remember that to eat is to take life. The class is an introduction into butchery in a way that teaches of the deliciousness, respect and celebration that is created through an honest relationship with our food.

  • Conscious meat harvest of a goat
  • The process of taking a live animal to your dinner plate
  • Uses and purpose for all parts of the animal
This class is not for everyone but will be invaluable for the homestead goat owner, hunter or chef who wants to learn how to consciously butcher small, large animals on their own.

Class Description:

In this class, we remember that to eat is to take life. The class is an introduction into butchery in a way that teaches of the deliciousness, respect and celebration that is created through an honest relationship with our food. We will be butchering one of Maagic Mountain Farm’s goats and learning how to transform the live animal into food, tools, fiber and more! We begin by learning about the herd on its pasture. Throughout will be a smattering of culinary advice, recipes, utilitarian uses, ethics, respectful conduct and more.

JT Beggs – Instructor

Descended from Shepherds of Northern Spain, Scotland and Hungary, JT has spent much of his twenties shepherding on the Dziłizhin Diné Bikeyah, Navajo Nation this is where he has developed a deep admiration and appreciation of sheep and goats as a way of life and a food. He has studied the cookery of shepherds from many cultures around the world and is constantly learning new ways to prepare, cook and eat these animals. He and his sister run a business as private chefs and caterers called Kin and Kitchen. JT is not even at all shy of mutton when it is raised correctly! He hopes to inspire reverence, appreciation and stewardship of the sources of our foods!
